Arctic Winter Games International Delegates Visit Grande Prairie
Members of the Arctic Winter Games International Committee (AWGIC) are in Grande Prairie from Wednesday to Saturday for their first visit since the city was named host of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games.
The International Committee was accompanied by the Chefs de Mission and Assistant Chefs de Mission of participating contingents. While in the city, the 20 delegates will tour some of the venues to be used for the Games, which will be held from March 6 – 13, 2010. The delegates will also hear presentations from the 2010 Arctic Winter Games Host Society divisions in areas including sport, culture, volunteers, sponsorship and marketing. The delegates will have an opportunity to review the progress that the 2010 Host Society has made since being awarded the Games on January 31, 2007.
Then international delegates will represent most of the participating sport and cultural contingents that will be in attendance at the 2010 Games. Delegates from Team Yamal and Team Sami were unable to
be in attendance for the meetings. Contingents at the 2010 Games include the Northwest Territories, Alaska, Yukon, Nunavut, Nunavik (Quebec), Northern Alberta, Greenland, Yamal-Nenets (Russia), and Sami (Norway/Sweden/Finland/Russia).
Thursday evening, representatives from the City of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie, County of Greenview, and the Government of Alberta will join the delegates and members of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games Host Society for a banquet. During their stay, some of the delegates plan to attend a Storm Hockey game, as well as a Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves volleyball game.
