Arctic Winter Games Volunteers Flying High

The Arctic Winter Games International Committee (AWGIC) announced today the sports that will be part of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games.

The Host Society for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games was ecstatic to learn that among the sports listed was the addition of the Freestyle Skiing.

"This so great for the Games and our local ski club. We worked so hard to meet the requirements necessary for the International Committee," says Marty Tingstad, Director of Sport Technical. "We were truly hoping that the International Committee would recognize the importance of adding this growing sport and we are thrilled the hard work paid off."

The Host Society needed to have three Contingents agree to send a team to support the nomination. In order to do this they needed to reach out to the 7 International Contingents for their support.

"We are grateful for the contingents that came forward to support our request," says Debbie Reid, president of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games. "This is just another example of the true commitment and volunteer spirit we are surrounded by, when volunteers like Marty and Carrie Ann Dunlap, Sport Chair of Freestyle Skiing, go above and beyond for the good of the Games."

The Arctic Winter Games is a high profile circumpolar sport and cultural event for northern participants. Since their inception in 1970, the Games now include contingents from Alaska, Greenland, Canada North of the 55th parallel which includes the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavut, Nunavik, and Team Alberta North. Invited contingents include the Sami people of northern Europe and the Yamal people of northern Russia. Grande Prairie is the southern-most community to host the Games, to be held from March 6-13, 2010.
