2010 Arctic Winter Games Commends Federal Government for its Commitment to Developing Athletes and Performers

GRANDE PRAIRIE, Alberta, March 7, 2009 – Debbie Reid, president of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games Host Society, commended the federal government for its support of this international event that brings together northern youth to compete in a variety of sports and celebrate their cultural values.

 
The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Labour, on behalf of the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport), announced in Grande Prairie that the Government of Canada is proud to support the 2010 Arctic Winter Games.
 
Said Debbie Reid, president of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games: “On behalf of the Host Society I want to express our appreciation to the Government of Canada for your commitment not only to our Games, but to the Arctic Winter Games movement. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for young athletes and cultural participants from northern communities take part in a positive athletic and cultural exchange.
 
“Your involvement and financial assistance will be of great support as we prepare to host the circumpolar world just a year from now.”
 
The Games have been held every two years since 1970. Close to 2000 athletes, coaches, officials, and cultural performers are expected to participate in the 2010 Games, which will take place from March 6 to 13, 2010. The theme of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games is “Dream Achieve Inspire.” The Government of Canada has committed up to $400,000 to help offset the cost of the Games.
 
“The values that we learn from sport—teamwork, discipline and confidence—are important values that are on display in communities across this country and across the North,” said Minister Ambrose. “Our Government is proud to support Grande Prairie and our athletes as they come together in sportsmanship and friendship.”
 
Participants include teams from Northern Alberta, Nunavik (Northern Quebec), Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Alaska, Greenland, the Russian region of Yamal, and the Sami (Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia).
 
The 2010 Arctic Winter Games will feature 21 sports, including alpine skiing, Arctic sports, badminton, basketball, biathlon, cross country skiing, curling, Dene games, dog mushing, figure skating, freestyle skiing, gymnastics, ice hockey, indoor soccer, snowboarding, snowshoe biathlon, snowshoeing, speed skating, table tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. Each contingent will be accompanied by a small group of performing artists.
