Commitment to 2010 Arctic Winter Games Builds Throughout Region
Grande Prairie - The 2010 Arctic Winter Games Host Society recently welcomed the M.D. of Greenview as their newest funding partner. The M.D. of Greenview recently made a financial contribution of $135,000 toward the international event, which will bring thousands of athletes and visitors to the area in March 2010.
Debbie Reid, president of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games Host Society, said the M.D.'s financial support really speaks to the commitment the Games are receiving throughout the region.
"The 2010 Arctic Winter Games promise to generate tremendous possibilities not only for the participants, but for volunteers and communities in the entire Peace region," said Reid. "We're very excited to have the M.D. of Greenview on board, and thank them for their support in working with us to ensure these Games will be an outstanding success."
The M.D. of Greenview joins three other government partners who have already made financial commitments to the 2010 Arctic Winter Games, including the City of Grande Prairie, the County of Grande Prairie and the Government of Alberta.
"These Games offer an outstanding opportunity to promote our region to the international community," said Linda Side, sponsorship chair for the 2010 Arctic Winter Games. "We're looking forward to providing the residents of the M.D. of Greenview with even more ways to experience the Games and get involved."
The Arctic Winter Games is a high profile circumpolar sport and cultural event. Since their inception in 1970, the Games now include participants from Alaska, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Nunavut, Northern Alberta, Northern Quebec (Nunavik), the Russian province of Yamal, Greenland, and the Sami people of Norway, Sweden, Russia and Finland. Grande Prairie is the southern-most community to host the Games, to be held from March 6-13, 2010.
