2010 Arctic Winter Games Welcomes County as New Partner

The County of Grande Prairie has committed to financially contribute $500,000 over the next three years to the 2010 Arctic Winter Games.

"The County of Grande Prairie is proud to partner with our regional neighbours to bring the 2010 Arctic Winter Games to our region," stated County Reeve Everett McDonald. "The Games will showcase our remarkable region to the world and leave a legacy of enhanced community pride and socio-economic benefits for years to come."

The Arctic Winter Games will be held March 6-13, 2010. Grande Prairie is the southern-most community to hold the event.
"An event of this nature is not possible without the support of all regional governments," said Debbie Reid, president of the 2010 Arctic Winter Games Host Society. "The County has made a true commitment to the Peace Region by helping the Host Society with the resources and financial support to host a set of Games of this magnitude."

The 21st Arctic Winter Games are expected to attract about 1,800 international athletes and performers from regions north of the 55th parallel, including Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alberta North, Nunavik in northern Quebec, Alaska and Greenland.

The Games provide northern athletes with opportunities for training and competition, and promote cultural and social interchange among northern peoples.
