The City of Grande Prairie is located 456 kilometres northwest of the
province’s capital city of Edmonton. Home to just over 50,000, it is
the metropolitan service center for one of Canada's most promising
regions: the Peace Country Region.
As the hub for this region, Grande Prairie contains an abundance of
resources ranging from agriculture and forestry, to oil and natural gas.
The region offers a full range of educational facilities with university
programs, post-secondary options, and trades available at Grande
Prairie Regional College’s two Northern Alberta campuses.
The Queen Elizabeth II Hospital is a major regional facility for over 200,000 people within a 200-kilometre radius.
The area offers a wide variety of sports organizations and facilities,
while a vibrant arts and cultural community boasts live theatre,
museums, and Montrose Cultural Centre - home to a new library and art
gallery.
Work is also underway on an Aquatics and Wellness Multiplex which will
join the already existing Coca-Cola Centre, St. Joseph High School and
Grande Prairie Gymnastics Centre to become one of Canada’s largest
recreational and educational facilities. The Multiplex is expected to
open in July 2011.
Grande Prairie is also noted as the "Shopping Capital of the North". For
